FAQs – STUDENTS

Can I choose my Mentor?
Yes. In this program, you can browse the mentors available and reach out to them with your question or conversation.

How long is this program?
This program is designed for a once off conversation. This may be over email, phone, video conference or face to face. You should first reach out to ask permission for the conversation and the general topic area or question. If you are looking for a longer term mentoring connection, we encourage you to join the 12-week Industry Mentoring Program.

What can I expect a mentor to provide?
If a mentor accepts your request for a conversation, you can expect them to give you careers related guidance based on their own experience and knowledge relating to the issue.

Will the mentor accept my conversation request?
Mentors will accept your request if they feel they are able to assist and are available for the conversation. Mentors should let you know if they are unable to assist.

How/where will the conversation take place?
This is to be negotiated with your mentor once they have accepted your request for a conversation. It can be over the phone or by email. You also have the option to meet face to face or over video conferencing.

Can I use the program more than once?
Yes, but not at the same time.  As a current student, you are welcome to connect with another mentor after you have finished your once off conversation.

How can I seek assistance with the process?
If you have any questions about this program, please don't hesitate to contact administration at mentoring@latrobe.edu.au or phone (03) 9479 4790.

FAQs – MENTORS

How will students reach out to me?

Students can search the profiles of mentors involved in the program through the mentoring platform, Chronus. They can then reach out to you with a message through the platform. You will be notified by email.

Am I committed to accept every/any conversation requested of me?

No. When a request comes in you can choose to accept or not based on your availability and also if you feel you are able to assist with their question. We do expect that you let the student know if you are unable to assist, so they can reach out to someone else.

What am I expected to do?
If you accept a request, you will then negotiate a format with the student to have a conversation based on their question. This might be over email or phone, or a face to face or video conference meeting. We ask mentors to be open and reflect on their own experience in giving advice to the students.

What is the time commitment?

This program is ad-hoc, and dependent on students engaging with you. This means there's no consistent time commitment. If engaged by a student, we expect that most conversations will go for no longer than one hour.

Who are the students?

All currently enrolled La Trobe students over the age of 18 can apply to be part of this program. They will build a profile in Chronus which will allow you to view their study background.

How/where will the conversation take place?
